What’s Your Curl Type?

Do you know your curl type? If the answer is no, don’t worry! We’re going to teach you the universal language of curls so that you can identify your curl type, texture and pattern—empowering you to take ownership of your gorgeous curls!

First, we want to dive into the importance of knowing your individual curl type. Every curl type is different, and identifying yours will help with scheduling future appointments, purchasing products and caring for your curls. We want to educate all of our curly guests on this universal language so that scheduling curly cuts, treatments and color services is made easy.

HERE AT BE INSPIRED SALON WE CARE ABOUT YOUR CURLS

When we know your curl type, we’ll be better equipped to care for you and your curls. We’ll be able to pair you up with the right stylist for you, someone who specializes in your specific curl type and texture, and we’ll know the exact approach to take when it comes to product use and styling.

IDENTIFYING YOUR UNIQUE CURL TYPE

As we see in the curl pattern images, curls range from wavy hair (2A) through very coiled curls (4C). The numbers 1 to 4 represent the curl category you’re in (two being wavy; three, curly; and four, coily). The A to C letters correspond to the tightness of the curls—A is the loosest, C is the tightest.

TYPE 2A: Slightly “S”-shaped waves that stick close to the head and tend to be fine in density.

TYPE 2B: The wave usually forms throughout the hair in the shape of an “S” like Type 2a, but the hair sticks closer to the head. Type 2b waves might be slightly frizzier on the crown of the head and often lose curl definition easily.

TYPE 2C: These waves are the coarsest of wavy hair patterns, often including a few curls as opposed to just waves.

TYPE 3A: Curls show a definite “S” pattern that is well-defined and usually springy with a wider circumference.

TYPE 3B: Curls are more voluminous and have a smaller circumference than Type 3a curls.

TYPE 3C: Curls resemble tight corkscrews with a narrow circumference. Type 3c hair tends to be higher in density and coarser than Type 2 or 3 hair.

TYPE 4A: Tightly coiled hair that has an “S” pattern. It has more moisture than Type 4b coils and has a visible curl pattern.

TYPE 4B: Strands have a “Z” shape and a less defined curl pattern. Instead of curling or coiling, the hair bends in sharp angles like the letter “Z.” Type 4b hair is tightly coiled and can feel wiry to the touch.

TYPE 4C: Hair is composed of strands that will almost never clump without the use of styling techniques. Type 4c hair can range from fine, thin, and soft to coarse with densely packed strands.
